More about Shatta

Shatta is a music genre born in the French-speaking Caribbean, mainly in the Antilles and Haiti, in the 1990s. Emerging from a blend of Jamaican dancehall, zouk and traditional Caribbean rhythms, shatta quickly established itself as a festive, dance-floor-oriented genre, driven by hypnotic riddims and lyrics in Creole or French. Its name evokes the electric energy of the Antillean dance floor and the warmth of Creole evenings.

Musically, shatta is characterised by deep bass lines, syncopated electronic percussion and catchy vocal melodies, often over looping riddims. DJs play a central role in the genre's ecosystem, selecting and broadcasting the riddims over which artists lay their vocals. Shatta borrows as much from ragga as from Haitian konpa, creating a unique synthesis that has conquered the Caribbean, Antillean diasporas in mainland France and beyond.

Among the leading artists of the shatta scene, NESLY has established himself as one of the genre's most recognisable voices, blending shatta and zouk in polished productions that appeal to a wide audience. DJ KAWEST represents the DJ side of the movement, and Smally embodies the new Creole generation of shatta. The scene remains very active in the Antilles and in mainland France.

Shatta festivals and Caribbean music events are the unmissable gathering points for fans of the genre. In the Antilles, evening parties and carnivals are shatta's natural habitat, while in France, zouk and Afro-Caribbean music festivals regularly incorporate shatta programming. These festive events, driven by a passionate community, reflect the vitality of a music firmly rooted in Caribbean joie de vivre.
