Reggae at festivals

Reggae was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in the late 1960s, following ska and rocksteady; in 1968 Toots and the Maytals' "Do the Reggay" gave the genre its name. A reggae festival usually mixes roots, dancehall and dub, with sound systems running alongside the live stages. In Europe the season is summer and outdoors, in Germany, Spain or France.

Summerjam, first held in 1986 near Cologne, takes place in early July and reaches its 40th year in 2027. Rototom Sunsplash began in Italy in 1994 and moved in 2010 to Benicàssim on the Spanish coast, where it runs for a week in August. In the US, California Roots has used the Monterey County Fairgrounds since 2010 on the last weekend of May, with reggae, reggae rock and hip-hop on the bill.
