More about Zouk

Zouk was born in the French Antilles in the early 1980s, driven by the group Kassav', founded in Guadeloupe. A festive and danceable synthesis of Caribbean music traditions — gwo ka, biguine, kadans — enriched with modern electronic sounds, it quickly conquered the entire Caribbean diaspora before spreading to Africa, Brazil and Europe. The word 'zouk' originally referred to a popular party venue in the Antilles.

Musically, zouk is distinguished by its entrancing medium tempo, deep basslines, warm brass and harmonised vocals sung in Creole. The characteristic binary rhythm invites the body to sway, and the dance — slow and close together in pairs — is inseparable from the musical experience. Zouk also gave rise to variants such as Brazilian zouk love, slower and more sensual, which developed in the Lusophone world.

The zouk scene remains very vibrant thanks to iconic artists. La Compagnie Créole perpetuates the festive tradition with humour and infectious energy. Priscillia and Nesly embody the romantic vein of the genre, while DJ Kawest bridges classic zouk and modern electronics on Caribbean dance floors.

Zouk festivals are essential gatherings for the Caribbean diaspora and Latin dance enthusiasts across Europe. Events such as the Zouk Festival in Paris or the Guadeloupean and Martinican carnivals offer rich programmes where live music and Creole culture intertwine. Zouk embodies a collective joy of living and a deep attachment to island roots.
