Shoegaze

Shoegaze is an alternative rock subgenre characterized by a dense, ethereal soundscape created through layers of heavily-effected guitars, often featuring distortion, reverb, and delay, alongside obscured vocals and a generally introspective, dreamy atmosphere. Emerging in the late 1980s in the UK, it was influenced by noise pop and psychedelic rock, with its name originating from the bands' tendency to gaze at their extensive pedalboards during performances. Iconic artists include My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Ride, who defined the genre's sonic palette. Shoegaze experienced its peak popularity in the early 1990s and has seen a resurgence in the 2010s, influencing subsequent indie and dream pop acts.

More about Shoegaze

Shoegaze is one of the most immersive and sensual genres in the history of alternative rock. Born in the United Kingdom in the late 1980s, it takes its name from the characteristic stage behaviour of its musicians: gazing at their feet and effect pedal boards rather than interacting with the audience, they create an atmosphere of total contemplation, almost meditative. This posture is not shyness but an invitation to plunge into a wall of sound that absorbs all attention.

Musically, shoegaze is defined by massive treatment of the electric guitar: distortion, deep reverb, chorus, flanger, and delay are layered to create dense, ethereal sonic textures. Vocals are often buried in the mix, treated as an instrument among others rather than as a dominant narrative vehicle. The result is music that erases the boundaries between noise and melody, between aggression and beauty. My Bloody Valentine and their album Loveless (1991) remain the genre's absolute reference, a masterpiece that redefined the sonic possibilities of rock.
