Stoner Metal
Stoner metal is characterized by hypnotic, simple, and repetitive rhythms, a very heavy bass, melodic vocals, and a "retro" production aesthetic, creating a thick, often hazy atmosphere. This subgenre emerged and gained popularity in the 1990s, blending elements of doom metal, psychedelic rock, blues rock, acid rock, and classic heavy metal. Key pioneers include Kyuss and Sleep, whose sound defined the genre's sludgy, groove-laden foundations. The term "stoner rock" itself likely originated from the 1997 compilation *Burn One Up! Music for Stoners*, solidifying its identity.
More about Stoner Metal
Stoner metal is an invitation to psychedelic travel under a blanket of monumental riffs. Born in California's Mojave Desert in the 1990s, it is the spiritual offspring of 1970s heavy rock groups — Black Sabbath for riff architecture, Blue Cheer and Hawkwind for acid psychedelia, and Kyuss itself for a new synthesis. The group Kyuss, formed in Palm Springs in the mid-1980s, is universally recognised as the genre's inventor: their desert concerts, organised by the light of portable generators, created a unique atmosphere between hypnotic trance and mystical communion.
Musically, stoner metal is defined by guitars tuned in dropped tuning (often to Db or even lower), circular and hypnotic riffs that turn endlessly like sonic mantras, a thick and rumbling bass that is as much felt as heard, and a groovy drumming inherited from funk and psychedelic rock. The vocals are often melodic and relaxed, almost nonchalant, contrasting with the underlying instrumental power. Production values analogue and warm sound, saturated amplifiers, and resonant rooms.
