Outside Lands: music, wine and great food under the Golden Gate Park fog
In San Francisco, the first weekend of August belongs to Outside Lands. Since 2008 it has turned a corner of Golden Gate Park into a world of its own, and the 2026 edition (7-9 August) marks, according to the official site, its eighteenth year in the park. What sets it apart from America's other major festivals comes down to one idea: here the music is something you eat and drink as much as hear. Wine Lands gathers California's best wineries, Gastromagic puts celebrity chefs on stage in live culinary performances, Cheese Lands and Beer Lands keep the party going, and Grass Lands, launched in 2018, was billed as "the first curated cannabis experience at a major American festival." All of it wrapped in the bay's famous summer fog.
The 2026 bill, some 90 artists deep, rolls out headliners announced day by day. On Friday 7 August, Charli XCX and the melodic hardcore of Turnstile set the tone. Saturday the 8th pairs The Strokes with the return of The xx, the pop project of actor Djo and the restless pop of PinkPantheress. Sunday the 9th closes with RÜFÜS DU SOL alongside Australia's Empire of the Sun and Death Cab for Cutie. It is a fittingly eclectic line-up, one that lets indie rock and electronic acts share the same days.
That breadth is no accident: Outside Lands bills itself as the largest independently owned festival in the United States, drawing crowds of around 225,000. The SOMA stage, introduced in 2021, is devoted entirely to house music, a sign of musical curiosity that hasn't faded. As for tickets, 3-Day GA, GA+ and VIP passes had already sold out by the time daily line-ups were revealed, with single-day passes starting around $249 according to specialist press. It's a weekend where people come for the alternative scene as much as for a glass of zinfandel.
