Festivals near Lorient

Facing the Atlantic and the great natural harbour that gives it life, Lorient carries the open sea in its very name — a legacy of the East India Company, of arsenals and seafarers. That maritime, Celtic identity runs through everything the city celebrates, starting with the Festival Interceltique de Lorient, which every August sends pipe bands, bagpipes and Celtic nations parading along the Scorff. For ten days, the city becomes the world capital of Celtic world music, from the big stadium shows at Le Moustoir to the fest-noz spilling onto the quays. It is perhaps the festival that sums Lorient up best: open, proud of its Breton roots and turned toward distant shores.

The rest of the season carries that same cross-cultural curiosity across the wider Morbihan. In late August, Les Galettes du Monde weave the Breton spirit together with cultures from far away, while deep in winter Roue Waroch, in Plescop near Vannes, sets dancers spinning to fest-noz and traditional music.
