Deep House

Deep house is characterized by its soulful, often acoustic sound, featuring extended instrumental passages, a tempo between 120-130 BPM, and a generally laid-back, atmospheric energy. Emerging in the 1980s in Chicago and New York, it blends elements of Chicago house with 90s jazz-funk and touches of soul, creating a rich, melodic texture. Key pioneers include Marshall Jefferson and Larry Heard (Mr. Fingers), whose tracks like "Mystery of Love" and "Can You Feel It" significantly shaped the genre. Its enduring appeal lies in its sophisticated grooves and emotional depth, influencing countless electronic music artists.

More about Deep House

Deep House is the melancholic and sophisticated conscience of house music. If original Chicago House was euphoric and communal, deep house adds an introspective, jazzistic, and emotional dimension that makes it one of the most elaborate forms of club electronic music. It does not merely invite dancing: it invites feeling, remembering, and inward travel.

Musically, deep house is defined by a moderate tempo (120–130 BPM), deep and meditative basslines, jazz piano chords, muted strings, and soul vocals treated with room and reverb effects that create an impression of space and depth. Tracks are long, structured for the night and for gentle trance. Larry Heard (alias Mr. Fingers) with his quasi-mystical compositions for Trax Records and Marshall Jefferson defined the sound in the 1980s. In the 1990s, the Moodymann collective and the Detroit scene carried deep house to heights of expressiveness.

On FestT, deep house is one of the most represented genres with 148 festivals. Lost Frequencies leads with 13 appearances, his accessible and melodic version of deep house having won a very wide audience. Ofenbach (10), Feder (8), Kungs (7), Synapson (7), and Imany (7) form the core of the French-speaking deep house scene. The Avener (6) and East End Dubs (7) illustrate the more underground facets of the genre.

Deep house remains one of the most enduring and influential genres in contemporary electronic music, capable of reaching both underground clubs and major festival stages.
