Psytrance

Psytrance is an electronic music genre defined by its driving, often rapid rhythms and intricate, layered melodies crafted from fast riffs, creating a hypnotic and energetic atmosphere. Originating from Goa trance, it emerged from the vibrant psychedelic scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s, evolving with influences from techno and acid house. Iconic artists include Infected Mushroom, Astrix, and Hallucinogen. Its diverse subgenres, like full-on, forest, and dark psytrance, contribute to its global cultural impact, particularly within outdoor festival communities.

More about Psytrance

Psytrance (psychedelic trance) was born in Goa, on India's west coast, in the 1980s among the international hippie community that had settled there since the 1960s. From beach parties mixing experimental electronic music and collective psychedelic experiences, a recognizable sound gradually emerged: fast tempos between 140 and 150 BPM, deep and saturated basslines, hypnotic melodic lines in successive layers, and a trance atmosphere conducive to altered states of consciousness. The Goa trance of the 1990s constitutes the direct matrix of psytrance, already bearing all its fundamental characteristics.

Musically, psytrance is distinguished by its characteristic sawtooth bassline rolls, repetitive synthetic arpeggios that create a hypnotic state, complex multi-layered percussion, and deliberate psychoacoustic effects — panning, filters, distortions — designed to maximize impact on an outdoor dancefloor. The typical structure of a psytrance track relies on a constant high BPM and intensity variations more subtle than in other trance subgenres, creating a continuous trance state rather than dramatic builds and drops. Subgenres include full-on, dark psy, forest psy, and progressive psytrance.

On FestT, the essential psytrance artists include Vini Vici, the Israeli duo that has become one of the world references for full-on psytrance, Mandragora, a major player in the European dark psytrance scene, and Neelix, the prolific German producer with multiple progressive nuances. Captain Hook and Perceval complete this constellation of the French-speaking and international psy scene.

FestT lists over 62 psytrance festivals worldwide. Legendary events like Ozora (Hungary), Boom Festival (Portugal), and Universo Parallèlo (Brazil) are annual pilgrimages for the global psy community. FestT guides you to identify these cosmic gatherings and plan your next journey into the dimensions of trance.
