Avant-Garde

Avant-Garde: 55 upcoming festivals, including 14 with tickets on sale.

Avant-garde music defies conventional structures, often featuring experimental instrumentation, unconventional rhythms, and a challenging, often dissonant, soundscape designed to push boundaries and provoke thought. Its origins lie in the early 20th century, emerging from a desire to break from established musical norms and explore new sonic possibilities, influenced by concurrent artistic movements and societal shifts. Pioneering artists like John Cage, Arnold Schoenberg, and Karlheinz Stockhausen exemplify its spirit of innovation. Avant-garde jazz is a notable subgenre, demonstrating its pervasive influence across diverse musical styles.
