Bluegrass at festivals
Bluegrass takes its name from Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys, formed in 1939: five-string banjo, mandolin, fiddle, guitar and upright bass, often with a dobro, all acoustic. Its festivals follow a model Monroe set at Bean Blossom: daytime stage sets, instrument workshops and parking-lot jams that run late around the tents and RVs. Bring an instrument if you play one.
Monroe founded the Bean Blossom festival in Indiana himself, and it is billed as the oldest continuously running bluegrass festival in the world, still held every June. Telluride Bluegrass, in the Colorado Rockies since 1974, takes the third weekend of June and runs a band contest. The free 3 Sisters festival fills Chattanooga's riverfront in early October. In Europe, Bluegrass in La Roche brings American and European pickers to a small town near Geneva in late July and early August.
