📋About
Wacken: 1,800 souls, the world's metal capital
Every summer, a village of roughly 1,800 inhabitants in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany, transforms into what fans call the Holy Ground. Since its modest first edition in 1990, Wacken Open Air has become the planet's largest metal pilgrimage, drawing around 80,000 festival-goers to the surrounding farmland each year. From 29 July to 1 August 2026, the W:O:A celebrates its 35th edition — and, true to its legend, it is already nearly sold out: according to the official site, only the final ticket category remains, the earlier allocations having vanished within hours.
The anniversary bill summons the genre's monuments. Judas Priest, Def Leppard — making their very first Wacken appearance — Sabaton and Powerwolf share the top of the line-up. Around them orbit the death metal of Sepultura, playing one of their final German shows, Sweden's Arch Enemy, the melodic hard rock of Europe and the classic heavy metal of Airbourne.
More than a festival, it has become a rite: a muddy field in northern Germany where the metal community gathers on what the official site calls its holy ground.
