Funk at festivals

Funk came out of African-American communities in the mid-1960s, when James Brown moved the emphasis onto the first beat of the bar, the one. It is dance music first, and it rarely gets a festival to itself: expect it next to jazz, soul and hip-hop, at summer open-air weekends or at autumn city jazz festivals.

In New Orleans, the Jazz & Heritage Festival, founded in 1970, books funk, R&B and gospel across late April and early May at the Fair Grounds Race Course. In England, Love Supreme has brought jazz, funk and soul to Glynde Place in East Sussex each July since 2013, and Gilles Peterson's We Out Here runs in August at Wimborne St Giles in Dorset, with camping on site. In northern France, Tourcoing Jazz Festival, founded in 1986, opens its October programme to funk, soul and blues.
