Downtempo / Ambient
Downtempo, also known as chill out or downbeat, is an electronic music genre characterized by its relatively slow, melodic pace, often featuring atmospheric textures and a relaxed, unhurried energy. Emerging in the early 1990s, it developed in parallel with ambient music, often finding a home in chill-out rooms of clubs and bars, particularly in England after the 1994 Criminal Justice Bill and on Ibiza. Iconic artists like Kruder & Dorfmeister and Thievery Corporation are central to its sound. Its widespread appeal has since extended into commercial settings, becoming a sophisticated form of easy listening.
