Hip-Hop
Hip-hop is a dynamic musical genre characterized by rhythmic spoken word (rap) over sampled beats, often featuring prominent basslines, drum machines, and turntablism, creating an energetic and often raw urban soundscape. Originating in the South Bronx, New York, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, it emerged from a vibrant cultural movement encompassing DJing, breakdancing, graffiti, and beatboxing, deeply influenced by urban life and diverse artistic expressions. Pioneering artists like Grandmaster Flash, Run-DMC, and Public Enemy were instrumental in shaping its early sound and cultural impact. The genre has since evolved into numerous subgenres, profoundly influencing global music, fashion, and social commentary.

Hip-hop was born in the South Bronx, New York, in the late 1970s, within an African American and Latino community grappling with poverty, infrastructure collapse, and urban neglect. DJ Kool Herc's practice of isolating and looping the instrumental « break » sections of funk and soul records at block parties in 1973 is widely regarded as the founding act of a movement that would grow into a global cultural force. From the outset, hip-hop encompassed four interconnected disciplines — DJing, MCing (rapping), breakdancing, and graffiti — forming a complete street-born artistic language.
Musically, hip-hop is built on sampling — the art of cutting and recombining fragments of existing recordings — layered over drum machines that emulate or exaggerate the swing of funk and jazz drummers. The MC's flow, weaving syncopated accents and deliberate pauses, is as compositionally significant as the beat underneath. Hip-hop differs from Electronic music in placing spoken language at its centre, and from Rock in dispensing with the guitar as its harmonic anchor. The Rap/Hip Hop subgenre represents its most directly lyrical branch.
Across 633 festivals, hip-hop's festival presence spans a remarkable stylistic range. TWENTY ONE PILOTS blend rap with rock and pop in a genre-defying hybrid, while GORILLAZ fuse hip-hop with electronic music and alternative rock in a conceptual framework all their own. VALD anchors the introspective French rap tradition, and Clipse brings sharp, street-level lyricism from the American East Coast. JOSMAN and SUZANE round out a scene that stretches from conscious hip-hop to the darkest trap.
